What is Sucupira?

Sucupira is the popular name attributed to several species of medicinal trees found mainly in the Amazon region and in the Brazilian cerrado.

Belonging to the genus Pterodon, one of the most used species is Pterodon emarginatus, well known for its large seeds full of medicinal properties.

What are the Sucupira Seeds for?

Sold in markets and used in natural therapies, sucupira seeds are a super popular remedy in Brazil.

Sucupira seeds act as a huge deposit of precious oil with numerous medicinal properties.

Standing out for its effects on pain relief, sucupira seeds have a greater number of benefits that you will get to know:

Sucupira Benefits

Pain and Inflammation Relief

One of the most studied and used effects in alternative-complementary therapies.

The oil present in sucupira seeds contains several active principles with analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, such as vouacapanic diterpenes.

The seeds (fruits) of Sucupira are traditionally used in low doses, in the preparation of teas and wines with effects in relieving various inflammations: muscular, rheumatic and throat.

It also has analgesic effects obtained relatively quickly, shortly after the infusion is ingested.

It is also said to have a tonic and purifying action and that this helps to complement its effects in controlling pain and inflammation.

Muscle Relaxant

In addition to its use as a natural anti-inflammatory, sucupira can be used as a muscle relaxant.

One study mentioned that its extract can help relax and dilate the bronchi, improving support in respiratory diseases, and another study determined its potential to relax the muscle tone of the rat intestine, through an antispasmodic effect.

Antiparasites and Antimicrobial Effects

Some studies refer to the potential of sucupira in combating parasites.

One study said that it could help combat trypanosomes, a class of parasites responsible for Chagas disease and sleeping sickness, as well as potential in the therapy of Schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection acquired when swimming or coming into contact with contaminated water.

It is thought that it can help to formulate repellents, in particular in the fight against the Aedes aegypti larva (the mosquito that transmits dengue and yellow fever).

An in-vitro study refers to the potential to eliminate Leishmania amazonensis (Leishmaniasis parasite).

A possible therapeutic effect is mentioned against a wide variety of bacteria, and some formulations are used in the treatment of burns and skin wounds.

The infusion of sucupira seeds is also often applied externally to combat acne, possibly due to its antibacterial effects.

Glycemic Regulation

There are some reports about the traditional use and anti-diabetic effects of sucupira.

Some studies refer to the application of sucupira-based remedies by tribes in Paraguay and Brazil to lower glycemia (blood sugar).

An animal study determined a reduction of 18.36% after daily administration of its extract.

Blood Fat Control

A study in rats determined that administering a sucupira extract helped reduce total cholesterol levels by 34.18% and triglycerides by 41.63%.
